What to Look for When Buying Mechanical Keyboard Switches

Here are some key factors to consider when buying mechanical keyboard switches, which are one of the most important components of your mechanical keyboard.

When shopping for mechanical keyboard switches, there are a few key factors to consider:

  • Actuation force: This is the amount of force required to actuate a switch, or register a keystroke. Switches with a higher actuation force may require more effort to press, but may also be more accurate and less prone to accidental keystrokes.
  • Travel distance: This is the distance the switch travels from its resting position to its actuated position. Shorter travel distances can result in faster typing speeds, but may also be less comfortable for extended periods of use.
  • Tactility: This refers to the tactile feedback provided by a switch, or the sensation of the switch "bouncing back" when it is pressed. Switches with a more pronounced tactile bump may be more satisfying to type on, but may also require more effort to press.
  • Noise level: Some switches are louder than others when they are pressed, which may be a consideration if you plan to use your keyboard in a shared space or want a more subtle typing sound. If you want a totally silent switch, use a silenced stem such as Gecko silent switches from Gateron.
  • Compatibility: It's important to make sure that the switches you choose are compatible with your keyboard. Many keyboards are designed for a specific type of switch, and using a different type of switch may result in improper fit or function.
  • Housing Materials: The material of the switch housing can have an impact on the sound signature. For example, Nylon tends to have a deeper sound signature, whereas PC housings tend to have a higher-pitched clack sound. UHMWPE-mixed housings are a good middleground between Nylon and PC housings.
  • Lubrication: The lubrication of the switch will play a large role in whether the switch will be smooth or not. Factory lubricated switches will generally be smoother than unlubricated switches. For unlubricated switches (with Hippo linear switches being the exception as they have a low friction UHMWPE stem), you generally want to lubricate them before using them for the added smoothness.
  • Price: Switches can vary in price, so it's a good idea to consider your budget when shopping for switches. More expensive switches may offer additional features or higher quality construction, but may not be necessary for all users.

Kinetic Labs has a wide variety of switch options that cover a wide spectrum of the options above. Take a look at all switch options to see the list.
